Monitored Alarm Systems

Monitored alarm systems are a great way to provide a feeling of security and safety for your home and family. Alarm systems that are monitored are available for both the newer wireless systems and also for the standard hard-wired setups, and are dependent on reliable connections to in order to communicate with the central monitoring center.

The cost of buying the equipment and installing an alarm system varies greatly depending on how elaborate a system is needed to properly secure your home, and depending on whether you attempt a do-it-yourself installation or call in the professionals to install. Monitored systems generally also have a monthly service fee in addition to the equipment and installation costs.

The monthly monitoring service will likely be part of the contract with the package deal if you purchase the bundle of equipment with the installation, which is a common arrangement. It is wise to read your contract carefully to see if you are locked into a specific monitoring service, and for how long, as this could be a problem if you are not happy with the quality of service they provide.

When monitored alarm systems are installed, often the company that sells and installs the equipment insists that you use their monitoring service, even though there are many other competing services that may offer better pricing and better service. You need to check the contractual agreement regarding monitoring so you understand your options and obligations.

Whenever your security system is triggered, the base station of your security system will send a signal, usually via  a landline phone, to the monitoring facility and indicates what type of problem the sensor or sensors in your home are detecting.

Depending on the type of the problem being reported, and whether the a dispatcher can make telephone contact with the home owner or not, the monitoring facility will take the necessary steps to notify authorities and have emergency services dispatched to your home if the situation calls for it.

Depending on a landline does present some inherent difficulties in that if phone service in the area is out, or if the line has been tampered with by an intruder, or damaged due to fire, there will be no way your home security system to communicate with the central monitoring agency.

Two options have recently been introduced to address that concern. One is a cellular based system that uses a dedicated wireless connection to assure the communications between your home and the monitoring center, and the second is a broadband monitoring service that uses your broadband internet to connect with monitoring services. Technology is rapidly changing the standards in this area, so be sure to ask questions about the latest and best communication solutions.

Monitored alarm systems are a key component to deter crime, and protect your loved ones, and give you peace of mind while you are at home and while you are away.  Because the reliability of the monitoring service is crucial to the successful operation of your system in an emergency, be sure to do your homework, ask for recommendations from friends, and know your options.

Panic Alarms

Panic alarms are designed to be a quick and easy way for a person inside a residence to signal an emergency situation such as a robbery or a life-threatening medical situation, and they are also available for people who are high-risk of domestic violence situations. Panic alarms are also well suited for business staff who are in vulnerable situations where quick assistance might be needed because of some menace to safety. Whether they are located in a home or in the workplace or public locations, panic alarms are a great way to assure an instant response to any type of threat.

Panic alarms, and similar emergency communications devices, enable people to activate an alarm signal which in turn initiates a response from a monitoring service or local emergency services in the event of a crisis.  Among the many choices available for such an emergency device are small hidden, or silent alarms, that send a signal to on-site security personnel or to a centrally located monitoring center, all without making the perpetrator aware of the alert.  Panic alarms can also come in the form of wall-mounted boxes with fixed signal activation buttons, such as might be seen in airports or other public locations where there are security concerns. They can also be portable alarms conveniently carried in a pocket or purse triggered by the individual pushing the alarm button.

In most cases, when panic alarms are triggered the signal goes to a central service that monitors all calls in order to be sure that it is not a false alarm. This means that in the case of a real emergency situation the alarm does not go directly to the police or fire department so there may be a delay of several minutes. However, this is a trade-off to be sure that the emergency services departments are not overburdened with false alarms.

Responding to false panic alarms is a great drain on public services and in most jurisdictions you will receive a fine from the city or county if a false alarm results in the police responding and making a trip to the site, either or your home or business location. Because of this disruption to police service it can be said that any false alarm is one too many but they sometimes do occur even with the most conscientious user.  Even so, false alarms can be easily avoided by keeping your alarm system maintained properly and by operating it carefully and with proper instruction of all family members.  You should also know how to quickly cancel false alarms as this is one of the easiest ways to avoid any false alarm fees.

One primary consideration when choosing panic alarms for the home or a business situations is the reliability and track-record of the company that will install, maintain and monitor the system. You also want to be sure that they are detailed in the way they teach you about the alarm system and that it is easy to use and control. You should also receive instruction about the correlation that needs to happen between you, the police and the monitoring service of the company you choose in order to assure that both false alarms and genuine emergency situations are processed.
